…follow up with recruits.
It’s crucial if you expect to become successful.

1. Power of Personalized Communication in Direct Sales
How would you feel if one of your friends sent out a generic birthday message on Facebook?
It’s kinda nice, right?
But it might feel much better if they actually remembered something specific about you and called it out!
Maybe they talk about a trip you talked about recently…
…or comment on that inside joke you’re always repeating.
That’s the difference between a “blah” message and one that creates a connection.
Keep this in mind…
…because it’s extremely vital when following up with your MLM recruits.
They need to know you see them as individuals, not lines you threw on a Google sheet.
So, stop using weird or impersonal scripts and think about this:
- Take notes & bring back the “small stuff”: Did you hear them say something about their kid’s soccer game? Or, maybe you saw the discussing a new recipe. Bring it up as you followup. They’ll appreciate that you truly listen.
- Focus on their “why”: Why did they join your MLM business? Did they tell you it’s all about time with family, financial goals, or something else? Again, it shows you’re invested in their success when you remember these details.
- Ask engaging questions: Don’t be that bland person who says, “How’s it going?” Instead, think of something more personal like, “What’s got you most excited about building your business so far?” You’ll find that you have far more productive conversations asking the right questions.

2. Establish a Consistent Follow-Up Schedule
Think about your first day in network marketing.
- Did you feel a little lost?
- A little alone?
- Maybe even a little confused?
Your new team members probably feel the same way.
But follow up with recruits can fix that.
You’ll build real trust when you follow up with recruits. They’ll say, “hey, I’m finally connecting with someone who cares!”
However:
Don’t overwhelm your recruits.
Strike up a good balance. You can accomplish this by using a consistent follow-up schedule.
Setup a welcome call. Use it to
- get to know your new team member
- answer questions
- get them excited about the business
After that, schedule in periodic check-in calls.
I like to do mine weekly at first, then move to every other week as they get the hang of things.
I don’t usually do really long calls. I don’t like that and neither will your people.
We’re all busy! So just:
- check in on how they’re doing
- give ’em some support
- celebrate their wins
3. Take Advantage of Multiple Channels
Don’t just stick to texting all the time or emailing. Throw in some variety as you communicate.
Send a quick text message after an online meeting, for instance.
Leave a voicemail another time…use an email after you have one of your quick chats.
Using what we call a multi-channel approach helps keep your MLM team fresh, where they never “tune you out” because you’re always using the same method.
Of course, you’ll find what works best for each person on your team the more you converse.
Long-term, this all helps build better relationships with your recruits.

4. Provide Value-Packed Training & Resources
Always, always, always look for new ways to help your team. That’s your job as leader of your network marketing organization.
What’s the best way to accomplish that?
Think about the things you needed when you first got started.
What tripped you up? What slowed you down?
Offer value-packed training for recruits on the products you sell. Your team needs to be experts and they can’t do that if you don’t train them!
But don’t just focus on product training.
Although product training is vital, you also need to train on how to present the business at the correct time.
You’ll want to teach your team some mindset training as well.
This industry is tough and it’s easy to get discouraged, especially when you’re first starting out.
Help them overcome objections that you know they’ll face.
Train well, so that your team become self-sufficient. Otherwise, you’ll get burned out trying to do it all for them in real time.
You might take time out to record video training and put them into a resource library for your team.
You could include things like scripts for inviting, FAQs, and even testimonials from other successful team members.
5. Celebrate Milestones & Recognize Achievements
Over the years, I discovered that most people want to feel like they’re part of something bigger.
They love feeling appreciated. You can work toward that appreciation by celebrating milestones on your MLM team.
Make a HUGE deal about anything your new team members achieve. No matter how small, make a big deal out of it.
Post about it on social media.
Send them a personal message.
Give them a shout-out on your next team call.
Here are a few ideas for milestones you can celebrate:
- Signing up for the business
- Completing their training
- Making their first sale
- Recruiting their first team member
- Hitting a new rank
Recognizing achievements goes hand-in-hand with celebrating milestones.
But, achievements can be a little different from person to person.
Did your new team member overcome a big obstacle such as crushing a sales goal they’ve worked at for quite some time?
Take time to acknowledge that accomplishment. Highlight their hard work. Recognition in direct sales goes a long way to building passive income.

Follow Up With Recruits FAQs
Is it worth following up with your MLM team?
You bet it’s worth it to follow up with recruits! You’re building a business and you need to keep the engagement of your organization. New recruits will start off excited. But life always gets in the way. They get distracted. Your job as a leader is to remind them why they started in the first place. Use this contact as your opportunity to check in on how they’re doing, answer their questions, and offer additional support.
How often is too often to follow up with a new team member?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But, a good rule of thumb is to touch base with your new team member within 24 hours of them joining. After that initial contact, aim for a couple of times a week. Again, keep it casual and focused on their needs.
What should you do when an MLM recruit ghosts you?
First, don’t panic. It happens to everyone in network marketing. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re gone forever. But you do want to take action quickly. Start by sending a quick, friendly message. Something like, “Hey Jill, just checking in! How ya doing?” Don’t pressure them or guilt them. Just show you’re there to support them.
Reach back out using a different approach if you still don’t hear back right away. Share a helpful resource. Tell them an inspiring story about your own business. Ask a specific question about the goals they already told you about.
Final Thoughts: Follow Up With Recruits
I think you’ve got the picture now.
